About Dr. Clay Darcy
Clay is a sociologist who completed his doctoral research at the School of Sociology, University College Dublin, Ireland. His PhD thesis entitled "Here are the drug takers: men, masculinities and illicit recreational drug use" explored Irish men’s views on, and experiences of, illicit recreational drug use and examined how men use illicit drugs as symbolic social objects to communicate messages about their masculine identity. Clay's research on men's illicit drug use provides new explanations for men's propensity to use illicit drugs; revealing some men use drugs for reasons that relate to their expectations about how men ought to be and act in contemporary society. Clay's other areas of interest include drug education, childhood, health, Irish culture and art.
Prior to studying sociology, Clay spent time working within the education and youth work sectors. As a youth worker Clay has specialised in the field of Drug Education and Prevention, facilitating programmes with young people and adults. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art & Design Education (Major Fine Art Painting) , Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management (Major in HR), and a Master of Social Science (Major Sociology). He currently works as an Assistant Lecturer in Applied Social Studies in Social Care at Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin).
